Highlights: Cruising on skis over rolling hills and along snow-filled valleys, carving telemark turns down virgin slopes, convivial evenings beside a pot belly stove in a cosy mountain hut - these are the ingredients of a memorable winter holiday.

The Two Thumb Range, above Lake Tekapo, has very favourable weather conditions for telemark ski touring, being east of New Zealand's Main Divide, the Southern Alps. It's rolling basins provide the ideal venue for telemark and cross country skiing.

Day 1:
2 - 3 hours hike/ski to Rex Simpson Hut - 460m/1500ft height gain. Afternoon ski tour and instruction in telemark skiing.

Day 2:
Day trip from Rex Simpson Hut with great views over Lake Tekapo and the central Southern Alps. Return to Tekapo.

Alternative Options: You can join a telemark ski tour (or snow shoe tour) midweek that can run from two to five days long. Based at Rex Simpson Hut, you can enjoy day trips with lighter pack weight and approximately six hours skiing each day.
